Mashiur returns

The adviser attends office with Padma probe still on

Prime Minister's Economic Affairs Adviser Mashiur Rahman has returned to work, although one of the World Bank conditions for the revival of Padma bridge loan was to keep him on leave during the probe into graft allegations in the mega project.

He joined his workplace at the Prime Minister's Office yesterday afternoon as his one-month leave ended on Wednesday, said his Personal Secretary Tapan Kumar Chakrabarty in the evening.

Relying to a query, Tapan said he knew nothing about the adviser's leave extension.

This correspondent could not reach Mashiur despite repeated attempts.

The adviser had been dropped from several committees, including cabinet committees on economic affairs and purchases, and he would be kept out of these bodies even after his joining, a cabinet division official earlier had said.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday asked Mashiur to appear before it on November 6 to face questioning in connection with the graft allegations.

An external panel of the World Bank earlier had visited Dhaka to monitor the ACC enquiries into the alleged corruption in the project.

In June, the WB cancelled its $1.2 billion loan deal citing "corruption conspiracy" in the project. It said the government has to meet three conditions, including sending Mashiur on leave, for revival of the agreement.

The global lender, however, in September decided to revive its loan, saying all its conditions were met.

How long the nation will have to bear the burden of politics and development ,which should have normally been a case for joy for the people. The reporting is becoming just a routine nature without any substance to draw any conclusion about the future of the political bridge on river Padma..

Moshiur, the fishbone in the throat of the nation, should resign. PM has blundered to allow him to join as the incident will create a lacking in belief with the global lender.

Seems to me PM's this stand does not care about What WB is saying, what shushil samaj are saying or other global or domestic experts are believing the consequence would be about starting of our Padma bridge project. If PM does not care about to uphold country's great interest rather depends on too much on an unelected advisor she should be resigned from the post or should be wait for the dire verdict from the voters in oncoming general election!

I do not understand why an adviser can be so important that he can not be left out of the government.

He got the fragrance of money and power and he will not leave easily. In fact, money and power will act as addiction for the people having less or zero ethics.

Thanks for this patriotic news report. The very purpose of this very important news report is to reflect the earnest outcry of the entire nation to get the much needed World Bank loan for Padma Bridge. The helpless common people are watching with deep frustrations of the Govt.'s mysterious role with this shameless Mashiur. Now it is clear even to a school kid that all-powerful Mashiur infect was working as a reliable agent of some powerful vested group behind the screen. Mashiur has put the last nail on the coffin on any prospect of this govt. in next general election. Alas, the senseless govt. failed to realise this simple reality.
