BCL embarrasses AL, its associates

Leaders believe troublemakers must be punished to restore image

Top leaders of ruling Awami League and its associated bodies feel embarrassed at Bangladesh Chhatra League's criminal activities, including the Bishwajit murder.

As the much-talked-about killing has made the government and AL high-ups furious, party leaders believe the time has come to take “strict decision” against BCL.

At least four top leaders, who include two senior ministers, didn't even want to talk about BCL, when The Daily Star approached them for comments.

A few others said they feel embarrassed after Bishwajit was hacked to death by a group of Chhatra League brutes in broad daylight during the December 9 opposition blockade.

They think much of their “achievements in recent months” and “regained public sympathy” following Jamaat-Shibir's countrywide attack on police has been ruined because of Chhatra League.

In these circumstances, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed the leaders of her party's associated bodies to remain alert so that none can infiltrate into their organisations with a plot to tarnish the image of the government.

“We are in power. People of vested interests will try to change their political colour and engage the party in different anti-organisational activities. Remain careful about it,” said Hasina, also the chief of AL and its different associated bodies.

The PM was addressing a discussion marking Martyred Intellectuals Day in the capital.

AL's two influential associated bodies Jubo League and Swechchhasebak League reportedly kept their workers away from the street showdown during the BNP's hartal on Tuesday and Thursday after Bishwajit was killed by Jagannath University unit BCL men.

Jubo League Chairman Omar Faroque Chowdhury said they had directed their party men not to be violent in any circumstances during the opposition blockade and hartal.

He said maintaining law and order is the task of police and government and he believes his organisation's prime duty is to create public opinion in favour of the government and the party through good work.

Talking to The Daily Star, he urged all the associated bodies of AL to give up violent acts for which the government might earn a bad name.

He also opined that bio-data should be taken and investigated before making anyone leaders in the AL's associated bodies. The Jubo League chairman said his organisation will leave no room for anybody found to have committed crimes.

Swechchhasebak League President Mollah Md Abu Kawser said they don't believe in street violence unlike some organisations.

Its organising secretary, Khairul Hasan Jewel, said they are on alert after the incident [killing of Bishwajit] and maintaining careful attitude in their political activities.

He demanded immediate arrest and punishment to the culprits of Bishwajit killing.

Jewel, also a former BCL joint secretary, said if anyone within any organisation commits a crime, it is not the responsibility of the organisation to save the person. The organisation rather should hand over the criminal to law enforcers.

AL Deputy Office Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das termed sad the killing of Bishwajit by BCL men. He said the PM has directed law enforcement agencies to show zero tolerance for the killers.

All countrymen are utterly traumatized now at BCL's criminal activities. Over the years, they have continued to stop the voices of people, to oppress the rights activists, and to stop all democratic and rights movements? Who involved them to support the criminals, conspirators, snatchers, thugs, pirates, encroachers, and all evil elements? Honorable Prime Minister and Opposition Leader, please, get rid of such student wings, show your goodwill for the country people, stop supporting student gangsters, let our students be meritorious and future leaders, and prove that you believe in good politics and democracy in Bangladesh. Please don't pull the country back. You still don't understand that many of our brilliant students and good citizens are migrating out of the country by seeing the alarming mis-governance in the educational institutions and in the country!

Stop bombasting word, we just want to see punishment of the criminals.

Current AL-led government has repeatedly supported crimes and sheltered criminals. Bishwajit murder in presence of the police is a case in point. The Government has made Bangladesh a safe haven for the criminals.

I don't think BCL embarrasses AL at all. People who have shame get embarrassed.

BCL should be disbanded along with other student organisations as these are the den of criminals and since BCL is an organ of the Awami League, so it should be in the dock for the murder of Bishwajit.

It's sad to say this, but I think the Leaders are the way a nation is. Unless, we as a nation, change ourselves there is no solution. The only hope is our next generation and by next generation, I mean, 60 years from now when all the adults alive now will be incapacitated.

Why AL always fails with Administration? If you look back, AL brings a lawlessness in the country whenever in the government. It needs honest and strict leadership at the top.

The whole nation is astonished to see how the top leadership of AL is trying to hide criminality of BCL men. The government is always supporting the criminal activities but such activities actually are causing great damage to AL's image as a leading party of liberation war. Why AL is going to hide the identity of the murderers seeing clearly the video-footages. Police should be given all freedom to arrest the murderers irrespective of their political identity. The criminals should not have any other identity except criminality.

This is an understatement! AL needs this 'student muscle' to create fear and rule the student politics. Only strict/strong law enforcement measures would be able to deal with these BCL activists. The history would be repeated again in another form and time.

As a Bangladeshi British I feel shame for our so called BCL activists' criminal activities. When my colleagues see the photos of Bishwajit, they become surprise and they can't believe it.

Ban all student politics and all student wings of political parties. University students are supposed to spend time studying and preparing themselves as problem solver. They are spending time shouting slogans, burning vehicles and killing opponents on and outside campus. Political parties are consciously using them for flexing muscles. They are just threat to democracy and existence of the country.

Our ruling party men do not seem to read the news and comments in the media. Please read and analyse the news and comments and then try to deliver such blatant lie about the killing of Bishwajit. We are appalled at the government desperately trying to shift the blame elsewhere and protect these heinous criminals.

Our PM is worried about infiltration of criminals in BCL. We are worried about lacking of student having minimum ethics in the student wing of the AL. How long our PM will try to fool us in this era of media in abundance?

Awami League must take whole responsibilities of the brutal killing of Bishwajit and stop creating any confusion among people as well as blame game. They must stop patronising the criminals. People gave their mandate to Awami League to maintain their security of life not to kill them.

It is nice to know that there are some top leaders who are embarrassed by the behaviour of their student wing even as some other leaders, including top ministers, say things to the student wings that sound like an open encouragement to act.

Please make databases for AL and its associate organisations the way you the leaders know who is your activist/supporter and who is not, otherwise how can Home minister or PM or anybody claim about the party activist?

For example, when all the electronic and print media are publishing/broadcasting photos of Bishwajit's killers with various BCL event then how the home minster or other AL leaders is claiming killers are not belong to the BCL......
