Bangladesh Navy ship SANGU yesterday left for Port Blair in the Andamans to join the military exercise of Indian Ocean Rim countries.

The six-day Exercise Mialn-2008 begins Friday, an ISPR release said.

The ship left Chittagong harbour yesterday afternoon to attend the exercises with the warships of countries along the coast of Indian Ocean.

Such joint sea exercises started in 1995, with a view to exchanging views on professional knowledge and strengthening bilateral relationship between the participating countries, added the release.

This year, 25 ships from 13 countries, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, are joining the exercises.

The ship is expected to return to Chittagong on January 25.
