Mohammad Shahjahan, a deputy managing director of Grameen Bank, took over as the acting managing director of the institution, officials said yesterday.

He replaced Nurjahan Begum, who went into LPR (leave preparatory to retirement) on Sunday.

On July 26, Shahjahan was promoted as deputy managing director from general manager.

I am on routine LPR. There is no issue of forced retirement, Nurjahan told The Daily Star by phone.

She took over as the acting MD of the microlender after Professor Muhammad Yunus stepped down on May 12 following his removal by the central bank.

A Grameen Bank source said a member of the board proposed extending Nurjahan's tenure as acting managing director but Muzammel Huq, the government-appointed chairman, did not endorse it.
