A memorial built after four decades of martyrdom of Bir Shreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir was inaugurated at Rehaichar Moholla in the town yesterday.

Brig General (Retd) Enamul Haque, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, opened it at the killing spot of the war hero.

On 14 December in 1971, just two days before the final victory, Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir embraced martyrdom in a battle with the Pakistani occupation forces at Rehaichar in Chapainawabganj town.

But no memorial was constructed in the last 40 years of independence. However, this year the local administration took an initiative and built it on Department of Roads and Highway premises at Rehaichar.

Earlier in 1999, a foundation was laid for construction of a memorial there but it stopped midway for lack of funds.

As the history goes, on December 10 in 1971, a meeting was held at Shibganj Dak Bungalow. Attended by Chapainawabganj Sangram Parishad leaders, Lt. Col Kazi Nuruzzaman, Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir and other army officials, the meeting decided to free Chapainawabganj town from Pakistan occupation army.

After the meeting, Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, along with 50 freedom fighters, crossed Mohananda River and engaged in a fight against Pakistani army.

On December 13, Jahangir and his men took position near Rehaichar Moholla in Chapainawabganj town. The next day he went ahead of his group and charged grenade into the trench of Pak army. But hit by a bullet from the Pak army, the valiant freedom fighter died on the spot.

The next day, he was buried near the graveyard of another valiant freedom fighter, Mazor Najmul Haque, on Sonamasjid premises in presence of Commander of Sector 7 Lt Col Kazi Nuruzzaman, other freedom fighters and local Awami League leaders.

When the District Muktijoddha Sangshad and Principal of Birshreshtha Jahangir College Enamul Haque in 1999 jointly took an initiative to construct a monument, Mohiuddin Jahangir's father Abdul Motaleb Howladar came to the town from Barisal and laid the foundation stone at the place of martyrdom.

Funds were raised from local people to construct the memorial but it was too inadequate and so, the construction work came to a halt.

However, after long 40 years of independence, local administration and Zila Parishad this year succeeded to build a memorial at a cost Tk 6.5 lakh.

Golam Rabbani, commander of local Muktjoddha Sangshad, Chapainawabganj and Manzur Hossain, brother of Bir Shreshtha Jahangir said they were happy to see the long-cherished dream of the people fulfilled after a long time.

Earlier, Chapainawabganj Muktijoddha Sangshad arranged qurankhwani, doa mahfil and discussion on Sonamsjid premises on the occasion of 40th death anniversary of Bir Shreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir. They also paid tribute to the martyr after placing wreaths at his graveyard there.
