Home Minister Shahara Khatun yesterday hinted at a positive result any moment in the investigation into the journalist couple murder and urged the media not to spread any rumours regarding the killing or suspects.

She said, “You [journalists] will perhaps get a result any moment as there have been remarkable developments.” She, however, refrained from disclosing any information about the probe findings.

On the other hand, after claiming “substantial progress” in the murder probe on Monday, police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday said no mentionable progress had been made yet.

Meherun Runi, senior reporter of the private TV channel ATN Bangla, and her husband Sagar Sarowar, news editor of another private TV station, Maasranga, were murdered in their West Rajabazar apartment early Saturday.

The home minister yesterday also declined to set a further deadline for the murder investigation to throw up results. She was talking to journalists after addressing the 17th founding anniversary of the Coast Guard at Agargaon.

Asked about her initial 48-hour ultimatum to the law enforcers to find the killers, Shahara said she had mentioned the time frame so that the law enforcers gave importance to the investigation.

She urged journalists to keep away from spreading any rumours regarding the killing or suspects in the investigation.

Meanwhile, three days past the incident, police said they were yet to find any proof of any journalist's involvement in the murder.

“We have not arrested or detained any journalist. We have not even interrogated any media associates on the murder,” Imam Hossain, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon division, said yesterday at a press briefing at the media centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He, however, said police did not know whether other law enforcement agencies, like the Criminal Investigation Department or the Detective Branch of police or Rab had arrested or interrogated any journalist.

Asked about newspaper reports on arresting six people, he said, “If you [the media] talk about detention, I would say we have picked up two security guards and the caretaker of the building the slain couple used to live in.”

He said police yesterday collected documents and information on what Sarowar and Runi had been working on from their offices to see whether there had been any professional issue behind the killing.

They are also collecting the book written by Sarowar, he added.

Rab, however, remained tight-lipped about their progress in the investigation.

Commander M Sohail of Rab's legal and media wing said the agency was yet to dig out any information “that can be reported”.

“We don't want to comment on anyone's detention unless we have adequate information about their involvement,” he said.

Meanwhile, the authorities of the Forensic Medicine Department of Dhaka Medical College submitted Sagar and Runi's post-mortem reports to Sher-e-Bangla police on Monday.

"According to the autopsy report, the journalist couple died after being hit with sharp weapons," said Zakir Hossain Mollah, officer-in-charge of the station.

The Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) at a meeting yesterday condemned the gruesome murder and demanded the arrest of the killers.

The meeting also appealed to all editors and journalists in the print and electronic media to adhere to the highest ethical standards of journalism while reporting on the incident and refrain from making any speculative comments.

Every time any gruesome crime happens in Bangladesh great home minister come out to the press to declare that the minister has had ordered the police authority to nab the culprits within a certain time! WOW, what an active minister's effective orders!! As if without her such kind orders there is no rules and regulations laid before the law enforcers of the land to carry out immediately!!!

Being a lawyer (so registered) she herself should know that such unwanted press briefing not only makes the ministry itself simper and applies added salt and/or insult to the victims' pain/distress but a huge disgrace on the rule of laws! Her duty is not to tell the people what she orders the law enforcers but to tell the people what is the result the whole ministry have achieved!

Why such a petty barb directed at journalists? Did the journalists ask the HM to issue the 48 hour ultimatum to begin with? I will submit that such irresponsible utterances actually create undue pressure on the investigators and result in scapegoats.

Shahra Khatun may give as many more warnings and assurances as she likes but she remains a symbol of failure in the area of law and order. Her 48hrs ultimatum has passed and that reflects how distant she is from reality. She must resign to save the face of our party AL, of which I am still a proud member.

So home ministry and police department will be active mainly if some Journalist or VIP killed ??For others these departments have other ideas .Police dept and RAB knows the criminals of the cities and can screen out withing few days ,if no political phonecall .Wouldnt press give an ultimatum if a poor civilian is killed ,who is not influential???Wouldnt Minister like Shahjahan khan or Road transport authorities , wouldnt mind if any influential like tarek masud ,Mishuk muneer or former economic minister saifur rahman killed in an unnatural way in RTA amounting to murder ??Conscious citizens are very much concerned and as a remitter i am concerned about how my foreign dollars is utilised in bangladesh ???

The current regime is fully responsible for opening up the floodgate of the culture of killings in our country. The way Sarowar and Meherun were murdered may have left many clues for the forensic experts. If the police fail to find killers of such murders, we would have misgivings about government's role, intention and motive.

We want to be hopeful that the murderers will be caught and punished ASAP but with the recent criminal history of Bangladesh the possibility of this becoming a reality is not very promising. With time we will put this matter in the backseat and will be preoccupied with new sensational things that will be happening around us.But please lets not forget about Megh!My sincere request to the journalists that please don't forget about Megh-please keep us updated about his well being till he becomes an adult. Please let us be aware if he needs any sort of assistance at any stage of his life so that we get a chance to help him out. The cruel fate and the criminals have taken away his parents but as a nation we owe him a secure ,loving environment and help him in every possible way.

The journalists have shown tremendous patience in not spreading any rumor about killing this couple. The reason, I personally feel, the couple was their fellow mates, as colleagues from the same domain. I sincerely request our journalists to follow the same model for any other ordinary human being of Bangladesh.

I don't understand? When an offence occurs in our country everyone specially government & media become so serious. they promise to take action immediately but after a certain period they forget it. we all know that, our home minister said the culprit must be arrested within 48 hours but where is result?
