Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir have attacked his police escort to foil the ongoing trial of crimes against humanity.
The Jamaat-Shibir men carried out the attack and injured several members of the escort by brickbats as the trial is going on smoothly and speedily, he told newsmen at his Indira Road residence in the capital.
The minister insisted that the trial must be completed in a very fair and unbiased manner, maintaining proper standard, and nobody can prevent it.
About 150 Jamaat-Shibir men carried out the organised attack in Karwan Bazar area, added Shafique.
As a police escort car was in front of the minister's sedan, the attackers sensed that there might be a minister riding the sedan.
Contacted, Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker said, "I think they (Jamaat-Shibir) have a gang of thugs for carrying out such activities and we will not spare them. They are committing criminal offences and we are taking action against them in this connection."
Nazrul Islam Mollah, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch (North) of police, said the Jamaat-Shibir men are attacking policemen in a pre-planned way in a bid to create panic among the law enforcers.
"They are doing so to disturb law and order as part of their scheme to delay the ongoing trial of crimes against humanity," he mentioned.
UNB reports: Addressing a programme at the headquarters of Bangladesh Coast Guard in the city, Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir said the police have been put on high alert across the country to handle such untoward incidents.
