Former Jamaat lawmaker Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher was freed from the Dhaka Central Jail last night on an ad interim bail granted by the High Court on July 29.

Jamaat leader Taher, also the former president and general secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir, was released after serving one year and five months' imprisonment.

Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (DIG Prisons) Maj Shamsul Haider Siddique told The Daily Star, “The former MP, who was elected from Chouddagram constituency, was arrested on March 7 last year and freed from the jail at around 7:30pm.”

The joint forces had arrested the Jamaat leader on charges of several cases, including extortion, looting and grabbing.

Witnesses said soon after the Jamaat leader was released, several hundred party activists and leaders received him from the jail gate. Later, Taher went to his Shyamoli residence.
