Renowned music researcher and Nazrul exponent Dr. Karunamaya Goswami received the Bangla Academy Literature Award '08 for his research-based works published throughout last year. To mark this achievement, Centre for Oriental Art (COA) arranged a programme at Bengal Shilpalaya, Dhanmondi on April 11. Noted cultural personalities greeted Dr. Goswami with wreaths.

The programme started with a welcome speech by Imdadul Haque Sufi, member secretary of COA. Noted folklore researcher Shamsuzzaman Khan and Luva Nahid Chowdhury, director general, Bengal Foundation were the special guests at the programme.

Renowned artist Qayyum Chowdhury was the chief guest. In his speech, Qayyum Chowdhury said, "After being introduced to Goswami, I learnt a lot about music."

Mahbub Jamil, chairman, Singer Bangladesh Ltd, presided over the programme. He handed over a crest to Goswami.

Noted Tagore artistes Mita Haque and Mahiuzzaman Chowdhury performed several Rabindra Sangeet at the programme.

Though Goswami is widely known as a Nazrul exponent for his elaborate works on the National Poet, he has also published several widely acclaimed research-based works on Rabindranath Tagore and traditional Bangla songs. Goswami completed his PhD on the topic 'Bangla Kabyo-geetir Dharaye Kazi Nazrul Islam-er Sthan" from University of Dhaka in 1988. His notable works on Nazrul are -- "Aspects of Nazrul Songs" (1990), "Kazi Nazrul Islam: A Profile" (1990) and "Introducing Kazi Nazrul Islam" (1999). "Rabindranath-er Palestine Bhabna O Onnanyo" (2006) is one of his notable works on Tagore.

"Stories of Africa" (1975), a translation by Goswami, is the first published work on African literature in our country.
