Activists of Chhatra League assaulted a newly-appointed principal at Barisal Government Brojo Mohan College (BM College) yesterday.

Prof Shankar Chandra Dutt was driven out of the campus by a rowdy band of BCL, BM College unit, led by its joint convenor Moin Tushar in the afternoon when he went there to take charge, witnesses and local people said.

Moin Tushar, however, rejected the accusation and claimed that his men had rescued Shankar instead and arranged for his safe exit from the campus.

Maksudul Alam Masud, joint convener of another faction of the BCL unit, alleged that the outgoing principal Prof Nani Gopal Das and a section of BCL men loyal to him had a role in the incident. They had been involved in corruption and admission trade and so want cancellation of the new appointment to keep their misdeeds from getting exposed.

Nani Gopal refuted this claim and said he had already handed over the charge to the acting principal on February 3.

The attackers also blocked the approaching road to the college by burning tires. When they chased Prof Shankar, he took shelter inside a petrol pump and left the area later.

Shankar told The Daily Star that he was assaulted by some unruly students of the college and informed the higher authorities about the matter.

Askok Nandi, assistant commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police, said hearing the news he visited the area and deployed police force and patrol there.

Prof Nazrul Islam, acting principal of the college, said he felt helpless amid such a situation. BCL men have kept all college activities suspended and have not been letting general students enter the campus since January 29.

How is BCL any different than Shibir?

Being a former student of B M College (once called the oxford of Bengal), I feel ashamed of this heinous incident and urge the government to take stern action against the concerned goons in the garb of BCL. In this hour of national uprising, people will not tolerate any lapse on the part of the government.

Utterly shameful. Will the ruling party call these thugs to account?

Why did the DC Barisal and SP pilce failed to provide necessary protection to the newly appointed Prinicipal? are they working to serve the purposes of those goons or they belong to anti liberation forces to discredite the present ongoing demand of death sentences to the war criminals of 1971 at Shahabagh? Those goons should be arrested, put in to the jail, expell from the college with no scope to get admission in any college at any cost and full admnistrative discipline should be restored at the BM college immediately.

I feel ashamed and sick to see this picture.Even in so called barbaric uncivilised society such things don't happen. A principal who is a supposed to be highly respected and honoured is assaulted in broad day light by the Bangladesh Cancer League(BCL) goons. It is not just the principal but the entire society and nation is assaulted. A teacher was killed by SSC student for not allowing to cheat. This is a very sad day for Bangladesh. But who cares. The entire nation is busy with what happened 40 years back but least bothered about what is happening now and what will happen in next future.

A few days back our PM said that she presented books to the BCL members. Wow! What a sweet dialogue! The way a helpless and old teacher was assaulted publicly and driven away by her golden sons from the BM College Campus does it at all attracts her attention? If does then what measures have been taken from her office to bring those culprits of BCL to justice? Or we have to hear “they are elements of Jamaat and BNP”, the way her office responded to the countrymen after the BCL goons killed the helpless Biswajit by chopper in broad day light?

What BCL activities doing during the tenure of the rulling party. they are killing people creating anarchy all over the place, are they given all power by the government to take legal action on their hand? don't they have any kind of consequences for their actions. Are they above the law? these BCL men are terrorising all over the place and no action taken against them.
