Import more Bangladeshi products
PM tells outgoing Italian envoy

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday urged Italy to import more Bangladeshi products and increase its investments in joint ventures here to further bolster trade and economic ties between the two countries.

She made the request when outgoing Italian ambassador to Bangladesh Mario Filippo Pini called on her at the PM's Office.

She called upon Italy to import more Bangladeshi goods including ceramics, leather, leather goods, jute and jute products, and garments.

Khaleda urged the Italian entrepreneurs to make increased investments in joint ventures in various sectors in Bangladesh including in ceramics, leather and garments.

She said enhanced imports of Bangladeshi goods and rise in Italian investment in joint ventures in Bangladesh would infuse dynamism in the poverty-eradication programme undertaken by her government.

She said Italian entrepreneurs have already invested in joint ventures in various EPZs. She said Bangladesh has quality leather and urged them to invest in the sector more.

The Italian envoy described Bangladeshis working in Italy as peaceful, nice and hardworking and appreciated their works as "nice and perfect."

The Prime Minister thanked the Italian government for enabling Bangladeshis to work there and urged the Italian government to take steps to help other Bangladeshis living there to work properly.
