Chirac's letter to Khaleda

French President Jacques Chirac in a letter to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia sought her views on the issues to be discussed in the G-8 summit in Evian, France."This is a clear recognition by the leaders of the world's most powerful economies that the views of Bangladesh on social and economic issues that confront the LDCs of the world are of great importance and relevance," a press release of the Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. In his letter, the French president has referred to the Bangladesh PM's letter written on May 6 last year to the G-8 leaders on the eve of the last G-8 summit in Canada when she had requested them to ensure greater market access for exports from developing countries. In her reply, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia reiterated the concerns of the LDCs on issues of trade, economic growth, sustainable development, fight against terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The prime minister also stated her government's commitment to sustain socioeconomic reforms in Bangladesh, adding that such reforms must conform to social and economic situation on the ground. She wished the Evian summit under the French leadership all success.
