HBM Iqbal, 6 others sued for 'graft'

The Bureau of Anti-corruption (BAC) has filed three graft cases against seven persons, including former Awami League lawmaker HBM Iqbal, on charge of tampering with tenders of Willes Little Flower School.

Anti-corruption Officer ABM Mahbub lodged the cases with the Ramna Police Station yesterday.

In one case, he alleged that HBM Iqbal and the proprietor of the advertising firm Tarijab Trade and Decoration embezzled Tk 2.30 lakh in the name of school decoration without floating any tender. They were also alleged to have gobbled up Tk 3.30 lakh by submitting fake advertisement bills.

In another case, HBM Iqbal along with the now suspended school headmaster Shah Alam, two members of the school management committee -- Reazuddin Ahmed and Joinal Abedin -- and Uttam Kumar Saha, managing director of Nandan Architect, were sued for appointing a consultant by not following proper procedure. The contract with the consultant was worth Tk 5 lakh.

Shah Alam, Joinal Abedin, Reazuddin Ahmed and engineer Uttom Kumar Dev were implicated in another case for misappropriating Tk 9 lakh. The BAC official alleged that these persons manipulated requirements to float a tender of Tk 23 lakh, exceeding the approved budget of Tk 14 lakh.
