11 killed as bus spins into ditch near Haluaghat


Eleven people including five women and a child were killed when an overloaded bus skidded off the Mymensingh-Haluaghat Highway into a ditch near Fatehpur at about 11:30pm yesterday.

The packed bus, coming from Haluaghat to Mymensingh town, plunged into a roadside ditch after the driver lost control, killing 10 people on the spot and injuring 41, of them 12 seriously. The other, whose identity could not be known immediately, died at a local hospital.

Being informed, police and Fire Brigade personnel hurried to the spot and recovered the bodies. The bus was still in the pond and rescue operation going on till the filling of this report.

The critically injured 12 were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) while others are receiving treatment at the Phulpur Upazila Health Complex and other local clinics.

The driver fled the scene immediately after the incident.

The deceased were identified as Shefali, 40, wife of Abdul of Abdul Halim Khan, Hemi, 3, daughter of Abdul Halim Khan, Jhumon Karmaker, 30, wife of Shyamol Karmakar, Parul Karmakar, 40, daughter of Haripad Karmaker, Pipasha Karmakar, 18, daughter of late Parimal Karmaker, Sarola Karmaker, 70, wife of late Mohananda Karmaker, Bachhu Miah, 35, son of Joban Ali, Newaz Ali Fakir, son of Kenu Fakir, Abdur Rashid, 45, son of Hazi Mohammed Ali, Azimuddin, 38, and Nazrul Islam, 38. Bodies will be handed over to their relatives later this afternoon, Phulpur upazila administration sources said.

Those undergoing treatment at the MMCH are Billal Hossain, 27, Nur Islam, 30, Parvez, 19, Anwar, 18, Helal, 22, Ali Hossain, 27, Billal, 28, Nelufa, 17, Rabeya, 35, Fatema, 40, Momena, 45, and an unidentified young man aged about 30.
