Invest in science, technology sector
Moyeen Khan tells scientists' symposium

Science and ICT Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan yesterday said the existing gap between developed and the developing world could be reduced substantially through further investment in science and technology sector by the poorer nations.

"It was not the resources that have always divided the world. Rather it was the lack of vision and less importance given to science and technology that had played a key role to widen the gap between the rich and poor," he said at a scientists' symposium here.

National Professor Dr M Innas Ali inaugurated the 2-day symposium at the Pharmacy Department of Dhaka University where Dr Moyeen Khan spoke as the guest of honour.

Organised by Bangladesh Academy of Scientists (BAS), the inaugural function was also addressed by Principal Investigator Prof A M Harun-ar-Rashid, Secretary of BAS Dr A M Chowdhury and President Prof A K M Siddiq.

Dr Khan said the developing nations could not reach their target as they had little research and development investment over the science and technology sector. However, the government has attached priority to science and ICT sector to earn foreign currency and create employment opportunities.

He said the investment in the science and technology sector was a bit different from others as the return comes slowly. He said private entrepreneurs could help raise funds for research in the sector.

Inaugurating the symposium Prof Innas Ali said the scientists have to be more practical for the progress in science and ICT sector. All the potentials in the sector have to be utilised timely and properly, he said.
