'Water act a must to tap water resources'

Bangladesh needs a water act immediately to tap its huge water resources, said a legal expert at a seminar yesterday.He also called on the civil society and environmentalists to raise awareness about existing bio-diversity laws to help protect environment. The expert, Dr. Asif Nazrul of the Faculty of Law, Dhaka University, said crores of taka have already been spent in the name of environment, but the progress is very little. He said that Bangladesh has formulated a draft of water act but without discussing with the people concerned. He also alleged that the draft has been copied from the laws of some African countries. Organised by the Environment Directorate, the seminar on 'Water and bio-diversity' was held under the auspices of UBINIG and Naya Krisi Andolon (NKA) at Osmani Memorial Auditorium on the occasion of World Environment Day. State Minister for Agriculture Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was present as chief guest while Dr Kazi Quamruzzaman, chairman of Dhaka Community Hospital, presided. Farhad Mazhar, executive director of UbINIG, Farida Akther, executive director of NKA, Dr. Kazi Quamruzzaman and M Zainul Abedin Mamun, a farmer of Moheshkhali, also spoke.
