Four including Jubo Dal leader killed in city

Three people were killed in as many incidents of violence in the city yesterday and a Jubo Dal leader was gunned down Sunday night, police said.

They said a top criminal was killed in Jurain, a driver was thrown to his death from a running minibus hijacked from Mirpur and a young tailor shot dead in Mohammadpur.

Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal leader Abdul Alim alias Kulin was shot dead in Banglabazar area on Sunday night.

Police said three young men, including Ujjal Roy, called 31-year-old Kulin out of his home in Banglabazar.

They took him to Ananda Mohan Das lane and sprayed him with bullets at about 11:30pm. He died instantly taking a hail of bullets in his chest and abdomen.

Police arrested two local youths Kabir and Shahin yesterday morning on suspicion. Ujjal has been absconding.

Four youths pumped bullets into 35-year-old Monjurul Hossain alias Bonda, whose name figures on the criminals' list of Shyampur police, near West Jurain graveyard at 9:00am yesterday.

Several bullets hit him in the abdomen, face and right hand, police said, adding he was going to his brother's residence at Dhalkanagar in Shyampur when the incident took place.

Policemen on patrol some 400 yards away rushed to the spot on hearing the gunshots and found Bonda lying in a pool of blood. He was declared dead on arrival at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Police linked the killing to gangland violence stemming from the share of booty.

His brother Miraj said Bonda moved out from his Dhalkanagar house last year fearing attacks by Commissioner Shahid of Old Dhaka with whom he had enmity.

He was accused in 14 criminal cases, including four murders, with the Shyampur and Sutrapur police stations.

Driver Wahidul Islam died when a gang that hired his minibus threw him and his conductor Abul Kashem at Karnapara on the way to Savar in a hijack bid early yesterday morning.

Police said they arrested two of the 10-member gang -- Shahidul Islam and Parvez -- following a firefight which left a constable injured.

Two men hired the minibus of the Alka Transport Company Limited from Mirpur Section-12, saying they would go to Shyampur, police said.

When the bus reached near the Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard at Mirpur, eight others boarded it with ropes and some clothes.

"A passer-by freed me at about 2:00am and a night guard of nearby Deen Islam Market called in police. But Wahidul was already dead," the conductor said. Wahid's mouth, throat, legs and hands were tied with rope and clothes.

While the gang was driving back to the city, a patrol team of Kafrul police chased it towards Mohammadpur. The gangsters then hurled bombs and shot at police.

Constable Tariqul Islam was injured and admitted to the Orthopaedic Hospital.

Two cases were filed with the Mohammadpur Police Station, one for carrying explosives and the other for attacking police.

The gang was involved in extortion for long, police said.

Meanwhile, unknown assailants killed Kibria near an under-construction building in Mohammadpur last night.

Police said a young man, Barek, called Kibria, a tailor, out of his shop at Chan Mia Housing Society Super Market at 8:00pm.

He and other members of the gang took Kibria to the building and gunshot was heard minutes later.

Locals found him dead, with a bullet wound in his head.
