Minibus hijack bid in city foiled
Driver killed, two hijackers held

Police foiled an attempt to hijack a minibus but the driver was killed by the alleged hijackers in the city Sunday night.

Two of the alleged hijackers -- Shahidul Islam and Parvez were arrested after a gunfight with the 10-member gang, which left constable injured. The rest fled.

Two men hired a minibus of Alka Transport Company Limited from Mirpur Section-12, saying they would go to Shyampur. When it reached near the Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard at Mirpur, eight other youths got into it with rope and some clothes. They blindfolded and tied driver Wahidul Islam and conductor Abul Kashem.

Kashem said one of the gang members then drove the minibus (Dhaka Metro- Ja 11-1848) towards Savar and tossed both of them out at Karnapara.

"A passer-by freed me at about 2:00am and a night guard of nearby Deen Islam Market infomed police, who came to rescue us. But Wahidul was already dead," the conductor said.

Wahid's mouth, throat, legs and hands were tied with rope and clothes.

While the gang was driving back to the city, a patrol team of Kafrul police chased it towards Mohammadpur. The gangsters then hurled bombs and opened fire on police. Constable Tariqul Islam was injured and admitted to the Orthopaedic Hospital.

Two cases were filed with the Mohammadpur Police Station, one for carrying explosives act and the other for attacking police.

The arrestees will be produced before court today. They resided at Asad Gate New Colony slum and were involved in extortion for long, police said.
