Hit-and-run driver drags doctor to death

A car yesterday knocked down a motorcycle-riding doctor and dragged him for over a kilometre along the Mirpur Road to Panthapath till he died. Hit by the car (Dhaka Metro- Ka-02-0626) in front of the Sobhanbag mosque at 11:00am, Dr. Mohammad Shajahan Ali, 40, medical officer of Pongu Hospital, was dragged on as his leg got tangled with the car's bumper. Witnesses said instead of stopping the car and saving the doctor who was still alive, the unidentified driver sped away. Witnesses claimed that police at Russell Square did not intercept the car dragging the body of the doctor. Leaving a trail of blood all along Panthapath, the car stopped ahead of Samorita Hospital from where the driver fled away, leaving the car and the victim behind. Hundreds of people who had witnessed the accident and later saw the car dragging the body, tried to stop the car as they followed it. The incident drew the attention of police when people reached the spot where Ali was left dead or unconscious. Ali was rushed to Samorita Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the attending doctors declared him dead. The doctor and his wife, Shahina Yasmeen, left their Pisciculture Housing Estate residence for Dhanmondi. Ali dropped his wife at Dhanmondi Government Boys School gate. She was supposed to pick their son Saiq Ibne Shajahan, a student of class three. Ali was driving towards the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) where he was a student of a three-year MS course. He was scheduled to seat for the second year final examinations on July 20. Police have seized the car and kept it at the Dhanmondi Police Station. Police said they have requested the road transport authorities to provide information about the owner of the vehicle. An unnatural death case was filed with the Mohammadpur Police Station.
