Five additional judges of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court were confirmed yesterday as permanent judges.

President Iajuddin Ahmed confirmed them under Article 95 (1) of the constitution.

The newly appointed judges are Sheikh Rezwan Ali, Mohammad Anwarul Huq, Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, Syed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain and Mirza Hossain Haider, according to an official handout.

Sheikh Rezwan Ali and Anwarul Huq come from the judicial service while others from the legal profession.

The judges are likely to be sworn in today.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Moudud Ahmed told newsmen at his Secretariat chamber yesterday that he received a letter Tuesday evening containing the recommendation of Chief Justice K M Hasan for confirmation of all the nine additional judges before expiry of their two-year tenure yesterday.

The additional judges not confirmed and therefore rendered unemployed are Khandoker Musa Khaled, AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury, M Nizamul Huq and Bazlur Rahman.

All the nine additional judges were appointed at the fag end of the Awami League regime in 2001.
