Five arrested in connection with Pubali Bank robbery

Police yesterday arrested five people including three women in connection with the sensational June 25 robbery at the Aotapara branch of Pubali Bank at Iswardi upazila in the district.Following the confessional statement of the arrested, police also recovered a double-barrel gun, 15 rounds of ammunition and Tk 6,000 from a bamboo grove near a graveyard at Naodapara of Iswardi upazila. The arrested are Monwara Begum, 33, of Shankarpur of Jessore Sadar upazila, Monsur Ali Akon alias Molla Dakat, 45, and his wife Moyna Begum, 35, of village Pati of Monirampur upazila, and Shariful Islam alias Munna Dakat, 42, and his wife Roksana Begum, 30, of Bhutpukur village of Gomostapur upazila of Chapainawabgonj. The five alleged robbers were arrested in several police raids in Sadar and Ishwardi upazilas of Pabna, Dighulia and Daulatpur upazilas of Khulna, Gomostapur upazila of Chapainawabgonj, and Jhikorgachha and Monirampur upazilas of Jessore district. Pabna Superintendent of Police Amir Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi thana Ilias Fakir, Sub-inspectors Abdul Kader Jilani, Ramzan Ali and Shariful Islam led the raids. Robbers on June 25 broke into the bank and took away Tk 2 lakh from the bank vault. They also looted a double-barrel gun and 19 rounds of ammunition.
