'Muggers' held, youth stabbed, boy hurt


Sutrapur police arrested two alleged muggers yesterday after opening fire on them when they were mugging rickshaw passengers at Natun Rasta in Sutrapur.

Mohammad Kabir was shot in the hip and Siddik Mia fell unconsciousness hearing the gunshots at about 2:30pm. Kabir was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The incident took place when the gang was snatching valuables from rickshaw passengers. As the gang attempted to snatch a gold chain from a woman, returning home after picking her son from school, she cried out for help. A mobile police team rushed to the spot and chased the gang who tried to fire gunshots. Sub-inspector Jahangir, the team leader, fired at the muggers.

But other members of the gang managed to flee with their guns. A case was filed with the Sutrapur Police Station in this connection.

In another incident, a student of Motijheel Model High School was stabbed by his friends at Aramabagh, Motijheel yesterday noon.

Salman Rahman, 16, son of Zahurul Islam was called out by his friend Shaon from his north Kamalapur residence. He was taken to Arambagh where three youths joined Shaon. The young men were locked in an altercation with Salman and at one stage they stabbed him in the chest.

The young men left the spot leaving Salman in a pool of blood after snatching his watch and cell phone. The injured was rushed to the DMCH.

In yet another incident, 10-year old Mohammad Rabbi was hurt in a cracker explosion at Merajnagar, Shyampur yesterday morning.

Rabbi, a resident of Gopibagh, Demra, went to Merajnagar for outing. While Rabbi was playing with other local boys, a cracker went off and he was hurt.

He was rushed to the DMCH and released after treatment.
