AL-BNP gunfight at Kushtia village leaves 40 hurt

At least 40 people including three women were injured, 17 of them bullet-hit, in a gunfight between activists of opposition Awami League (AL) and ruling BNP Tuesday night at Bilgathua village in Daulatpur, about 30 kilometers from Kushtia town.At least 50 shots were traded during the gunfight, police said quoting villagers. The clash was sequel to a previous enmity between two local leaders of the parties-- Islam Member (BNP) and Sakatullah (AL) -- over establishing supremacy in the area. Quoting local people police said the clash began at about 8 pm when a group of BNP activists led by Islam attacked houses of several AL supporters. The attackers ransacked and looted the houses. AL workers in the area resisted the BNP men, resulting in the gunfight. Of the injured, eleven are BNP activists and six are of AL. The injured BNP activists are Khoda Box 65, Abu Affan40, Ramjan Ali 30, Rokela Khtun 50, Rafiqual 45, Rustom 30, Kalu 25, Zahangir Alam 30, Mashiur Rahman 22, Fotazan 60, Borezan Khatun 50. The AL activists are Abdur Razzak 45, Haran 30, Rashidul 42, Anarul Islam 35, Mahidul 20, and Shamim Hossain. The rest injured people are apolitical villagers. The injured are undergoing treatment at Daulatpur health complex and hospitals at Kushtia. BNP leader Islam Member filed a case accusing 50 AL men.
