Bangladeshi troops in Iraq
Nahid Nawaz, Mohakhali, Dhaka
I was so surprised to learn about the US Secretary of States Colin Powell's request to the government to deploy Bangladeshi troops in Iraq. If our government agrees to this request and send troops in Iraq then it will be a very harmful decision for our foreign policy. Bangladeshi troops have earned good name by working as peacekeepers of UN in different countries. Now if they go to Iraq they will be working under the US force. The US force is the occupation force in Iraq. Therefore, it means that the Bangladeshi troops would be working as a part of the occupation force! Then how would our troops be able to help the Iraqis? Since the US force took over Iraq, one or two US soldier have been killed almost everyday. If our troops are deployed in Iraq, there is every possibility that the Iraqis would consider them as their enemy and won't hesitate to attack them! On the other hand, Iraq and Bangladesh both are Muslim countries. And we should be sympathetic to them and assist them, not act as an occupation force!
