JEC meeting in Dhaka Soon: FS


A meeting of the Bangladesh-India Joint Economic Commission (JEC) will be held in Dhaka soon, Foreign Secretary Shamsher M Chowdhury told a regular weekly briefing at his office yesterday.

The foreign secretary said though the date is yet to be finalised, there is possibility of holding the meeting on July 15-16.

Bangladesh government is always in favour of peace and stability, and will welcome and encourage any positive development in the region, he said replying to a question on the Indian prime minister's visit to China. Bangladesh has very good relations with both China and India, he added.

The SAARC Standing Committee meeting will begin in Kathmandu on July 8. Shamsher M Chowdhury will attend the meeting, which is expected to finalise the date for the next SAARC summit.

Responding to a question, he said the Vietnamese foreign minister and the state minister of Spain are likely to visit Dhaka during the current month.

Referring to Bangladesh's nomination to the Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), he said the campaign would begin at a higher level soon.

On unearthing of ammunition in Bogra, the foreign secretary said the matter is being examined by the Home Ministry.

Replying to a question on visa of Monica Ali, Chowdhury said she is not willing to visit Dhaka now.
