Police version of ammo haul

Police said yesterday the ammunition and explosives recovered from Bogra were smuggled into the country to cause deterioration of law and order, destabilise the situation and put the government in a pickle.

In a press release, the police headquarters said 93,192 Chinese rifle bullets and 174 kilograms of explosives were smuggled into the country to tarnish its image before the world. The criminals chose the spot to carry the consignments by road and waterway for subversive activities.

Investigation into the matter is on but any confusing remarks at this stage may mislead the probe, police said seeking caution in publishing reports.

The press release said main accused Aflakur Rahman Pintu, now absconding, is Kahalu thana unit president of the Awami League (AL)-backed Krishak League. Pintu's cousin Harun-ur-Rashid alias Jalal, arrested from Zia International Airport on June 30, is an active member of Bogra Sadar unit of the AL's youth front Jubo league. Jalal maintained close relations with Bogra district unit president of Jubo league Manjurul Alam Mohan, AL Organising Secretary Abdul Mannan and former home minister Mohammad Nasim.

Jalal used to frequent Pintu's residence and held several meetings with him prior to the incident, police said quoting findings of the investigation.
