Road mishaps kill 9 in Khagrachhari, Mymensingh


Nine people were killed and 73 others injured in separate road accidents in Khagrachhari and Mymensingh districts yesterday.

Of them, four were killed in Khagrachhari and the rest in Mymensingh.

In Khagrachhari, four people were killed and 68 others injured when a Panchhari bound passenger bus from Khagrachhari skidded off the road and fell into a ditch at about 8 am.

The dead were identified as Kuma Roy Tripura, 50, Tarindri Kumar Chakma, 35, Tambu Boiddya Chakma, 74, and Chikankrita Chakma, 70. Of them, Kuma Roy, Chikankrita and Tambu died on the spot while Tarindri succumbed to his injuries at Khagrachhari Sadar hospital.

The injured passengers were admitted to Khagrachhari hospital. Of them, eight were later shifted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) as their condition deteriorated.

Army and police personnel helped the locals in rescue operation.

Our Mymensingh correspondent reports: Five people, including three of a family, were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Bhaluka and Nandail on Wednesday night.

In Bhaluka, a traffic mishap at Hajir Bazaar on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway left the four including three of a family killed and five others injured at about 10pm.

The dead were identified as Abdul Baten, 45, of Khilkhet, Dhaka, and his two daughters -- Reba, 2, and a baby of 18 days -- and Ayed Bibi, 46.

Baten's wife Moharjan, 28, received minor injuries in the accident.

The four other injured people were admitted to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH). Police said the accident occurred at around 10pm when a Dhaka-bound microbus from Mymensingh rammed a road side electric pole.

In Nandail, a woman was killed as she fell from the motorbike being driven by her son on Nandail-Mymensingh road the same night. She is Selina, 45, wife of Dr Obaidur Rahman of Nandail.
