Wooforde wants Dokic in team

Fed Cup coach Mark Woodforde on Thursday revealed he made an indirect approach to Jelena Dokic at this month's Wimbledon championships about playing for Australia again.

Tennis Australia (TA) delayed naming its team for this weekend's Fed Cup play-off against Colombia in Wollongong until two weeks ago -- after Dokic ruled herself unavailable.

Australian number one Alicia Molik reportedly was less than pleased with TA's deferred team announcement.

Woodforde's admission confirms TA was keen to have Dokic, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist and world number one junior, back in its fold, despite their well-documented past differences, involving her notorious father Damir.

"I had a word with her coach Heinz Gunthardt," Woodforde said on Thursday.

"Obviously, I'd heard some of the whispers about (her coming back). It was just to find out what's going on. I think he was probably scratching his head a little bit, just as much as we all are back here.

"I can't give you any lead on what her mindset is. He (Gunthardt) confirmed that she has spoken about wanting to play for Australia but it hadn't progressed any further than that.

"He just said that she needed to try to get some wins under her belt at that stage.

"She'd had a few first-round losses. I think her mind really now is on getting her ranking back up.

"I don't think she's thinking about who she's playing for, who she's playing and where she's playing. It's about getting her ranking back up."

Australia's team to take on Colombia in the World Group promotion-relegation tie consists of Molik, Nicole Pratt, Samantha Stosur and doubles specialist Rennae Stubbs.
