BCL men beat up Hijbut Tahrir workers at DU

At least five activists of Hijb-ut Tahrir, Bangladesh (HTB) were injured while Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists attacked them on Dhaka University (DU) campus yesterday.The BCL beat up Sheikh Mohammad Towfique, a HTB activist and a PhD student of Sociology Department of DU. Three other activists of the same party were also beaten up in front of the DU Registrar building. The BCL activists also chopped Mohammad Ejaj Ahmed, a member of the HTB, a pro-Islamic party, in Dhanmondi area. He was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with neck injury. Dr Mohiuddin Ahmed, chief coordinator of the HTB, protested the BCL attack on its activists in a statement. Sources said the HTB activists wanted to hold a seminar at the Teacher Students Centre (TSC) under Society for Intellectual Change's banner. The BCL activists asked the HTB activists not to hold any seminar at the TSC. The BCL activists forced them to leave the campus. Later, about 25 activists of the HTB came to campus to meet the DU Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz and the BCL again swooped on them in presence of the police. The BCL chased them out of the campus. The BCL also brought out a procession and held a rally in front of Arts building to protest lack of security following the killing of two youths on the campus. Addressing the rally, the BCL leaders said criminals are involved in criminal activities on the campus sheltered by the government. The BCL demanded ban on the HTB activities on the DU campus. They also said the HTB activists distributed puzzling leaflets on religion among the students. Talking to this correspondent DU Proctor Firoz Ahmed said the HTB did not take permission to hold the seminar at the TSC. "Society for Intellectual Change took permission to hold a seminar yesterday but we cancelled it when we came to know about the HTB's link to it," he said.
