PM for raising number of standard educational instts
Viqarunnisa Noon School and College silver jubilee function begins

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday underscored the need for adequate number of standard educational institutions at district and thana levels to achieve institutional standard of education.

"Otherwise, we'll not be able to properly educate our future generation," she said inaugurating the two-day silver jubilee function of the college section of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College on its Bailey Road premises in the afternoon.

"I believe Viqarunnisa Noon School & College may be the role model for other educational institutions. But a handful of such capital-based standard institutions is not enough for raising the institutional standard of education in the country," Khaleda Zia said.

She said the nation could not move ahead without raising its standard of education.

Recalling the past, the prime minister said once the country had a good number of standard and reputed schools and colleges even in the remote areas, but the fame and glory have been lost due to various reasons.

"We've to restore that tradition and fame. I declared the current year as 'good education year' with a view to regaining the glorious past of the country's educational institutions," she told the former and current college students as well as the guardians, teachers and other guests at the inaugural function.

Khaleda Zia urged all concerned to take a vow to start a fresh journey from this year for attaining the goal of quality education.

Viqarunnisa Noon School started its journey as a preparatory school in 1952. Later, it was upgraded into college in 1978.

At present, some 11,000 students pursue their education in the school and college sections of the institution, including its Dhanmodhi branch in the capital.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia released a bunch of colorful balloons and pigeons in the air to mark the occasion.

After the inaugural speech, she exchanged greetings with the college students and teachers as she went round the 'pandal'.

The inaugural function began with introductory songs along with dance performed by the college students.

Education Minister Dr Osman Farruk, State Minister for Education ANM Ehsanul Huq Milon, governing body chairman Abdul Mannan MP and acting principal Royena Hossain also addressed the function.
