DU orders probe into campus violence


Dhaka University yesterday formed two committees to probe attacks on the activists of pro-Awami League Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and the campus correspondent of The Daily Star.

The committees were formed at an emergency meeting of the university syndicate with Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz in the chair.

Sources said one of the committees, headed by syndicate member Prof Kamrul Ahsan Chowdhury, will investigate attack on the BCL workers.

The members of the committee are Dean of the Business Studies Faculty Prof M Sirajul Islam, Assistant Proctor Muhammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan and the Provost of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall. The committee was asked to submit its report in two weeks.

The BCL workers came under attack allegedly by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists on the campus yesterday.

Another three-member investigation committee, headed by Provost of Zahurul Haque Hall Dr M Aminur Rahman Majumder, will probe the assault on The Daily Star correspondent Hasan Jahid Tushar.

Tushar was beaten up reportedly by JCD activists at the Zahurul Haque Hall on Wednesday night.

The Syndicate meeting sought cooperation of all concerned in maintaining academic atmosphere on the campus.

Meanwhile, some 161 Dhaka University teachers yesterday denounced attack on the BCL activists.

In a statement, they said the JCD activists attacked the BCL workers, including its president Liakat Shikder.

"They even beat them up when they took shelter in teachers' rooms of the Arts Faculty Building," the statement said demanding punishment to the attackers.

The signatories to the statement included Prof Khandker Bazlul Huq, Prof Sharifullah Bhuiyan, Dr Shahid Akhter Hosain, Prof M Mustafa Chowdhury, Dr Harun-ur-Rashid, Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Prof Sultana Shafi, Prof Mesbahuddin Ahmed and Prof Aminur Rashid.
