A contingent of around 150 police led by DC (north) Mian Md Lutfur Rahman and AC (Panchlaish) Shawkat Hossain was posted in Fatikchhari to continue the operation until rescue of the abducted businessman Jamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury.

BNP leader and Chittagong business magnate Chowdhury still remained untracked after eight days of his abduction on July 24.

Police yesterday placed Paroiyakora UP Chairman Akter Jamal Chowdhury of Patiya on a five-day remand.

Police sources said they are vigorously hunting for the prime suspects - top-notch criminals Gittu Nasir, BDR Salim, Habib Khan, Kanchon Nagor UP Chairman Abul Kashem of Fatikchhari and Aeochia UP Chairman Ahmedul Haq.

However, all the police effort are yet to yield any result.

Earlier, four nabbed relatives and associates of the suspected abductors were shown arrested and three of them placed on a five-day remand on Wednesday.

Sources said there were as many as nine kidnapping groups active in Chittagong. Three of the suspects of Jamal Uddin Chowdhury abduction case -- two UP chairmen and Habib Khan, a Shibir cadre whom Shibir disown -- are leading three of the gangs.

Six other crime syndicates are allegedly led by Nasir Uddin alias Shibir Nasir, who is accused in over 30 cases, Abu Tayeb, former general secretary of Chittagong (north) district unit of BCL, Sunil Dey of Jubo League, Iqbal, Fazal Haq of Jubo Dal and Sujit of Boalkhali.

Sunil reportedly entered Bangladesh after a long stay in India, sources said.
