Zia slips to third place


Grand Master Ziaur Rahman slipped to third after his second successive draw with GM Jonathan Rowson of Scotland in the tenth round of the Smith and Williamson British Chess Championship in Edinburgh on Thursday.

Zia, who played with white, moved down a place to share third position with six other players. They secured seven points each.

Indian Grand Master Abhijit Kunte took a solo lead securing 8 points and his compatriot Grand Master Pentala Hari Krishna was second with 7.5 points.

The other Bangladeshi players -- International Master Enamul Hossain Rajib bagged 6.5 points, International Master Reefat-Bin-Sattar six points, International Master Abdullah-Al-Rakib 5.5 points and FIDE Master Khandakar Nasir Ahmed earned 4 points.

In the tenth round: Rajib beat Neil MacDonald of England and Rakib beat Matthew Anderton of England. Nasir drew with Graeme Kafka of Scotland. Reefat lost against WGM Ketev Arakhamia-Grant of Georgia.

Meanwhile, Shawkat Hossain Pallab earned 5.5 points after the tenth round in the Major Open event. He lost against Paul Plant of England.
