Difficult wins for Abahani,MSC

Squandering at least half a dozen easy chances, defending champions Abahani Krira Chakra got past Ajax Sporting Club 2-0 to continue their winning spree in the Green Delta Premier Division Hockey League at the Maulana Bhasani National Stadium yesterday. The sky-blues' success was followed by their traditional rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club managing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over impressive Sonali Bank to register their fourth straight win. Abahani's Indian forward Amor Ayamma made an uninspiring debut for the popular Dhanmondi outfit. He missed three easy chances in the second half as his side could only score once in each half. Striker Ashraful Islam Shishu cleverly executed a hit to put the sky-blues ahead in the 13th minute just after Ajax defender Rajib Ahmed's goal-line save which was powered by Ramij Ahmed, who scored the second field goal in the 41st minute. Later Ramij got an easy chance before the break but the experienced player failed to find the target after brilliantly rushing into the opponent's danger zone dibbling past three defenders. But he made up for the miss after the breather when his almost zero angle hit kissed the Ajax board to double the margin and confirm Abahni's fourth win in a row. Unlike the shaky frontline, Abahani's defence played magnificently to foil Ajax's attacks. Veteran custodian Russel Khan Bappi had an outstanding game as he kept out Ajax's forwards time and again. It was Ajax's third defeat in four matches. MSC-SONALI BANKOn the other hand, youthful Sonali Bank tied with their formidable opponents Mohammedan neck to neck but finally the black and whites rode on their Pakistani Mohammad Anis's two spectacular goals. The bankers lost their nerve in the last five minutes which resulted in conceding the second goal with two minutes to go before the final whistle. After the barren first half, Mohammed Anis broke the deadlock with a fierce angular hit in the 47th minute aided by a superb combined attack, especially his compatriot Kamran Ashraf did an excellent job to send the ball into the box. Sonali Bank stunned Mohammedan just after five minutes when Issa capitalised on a rebounder with a powerful hit to level the margin. Following the setback Mohammedan desperately raided their opponents' fort to ensure full points but they also faced some good counter-attacks from the young boys. Finally Pakistani marksman Mohammad Anis brought huge relief for the title-contenders scoring his second goal in almost the same fashion in the 68th minute to confirm the victory. Earlier in the first half, Mohammedan goalie Jahangir Alam Ziku salvaged his side on several occasions. Sonali Bank suffered their second defeat in four matches.
