People put up road barricades in the city on Monday protesting withdrawal of BRTC double-decker bus service in the city. Two double-decker buses plied in the divisional headquarter. Their services were stopped on Saturday on orders from Dhaka after government's meeting with transport owners and workers unions, sources here said. The transport unions were demanding withdrawal of BRTC buses from inter-district routes. On Sunday, people laid a siege to the BRTC depot demanding reintroduction of BRTC double-decker service in the city, saying the government withdrew BRTC buses only from inter-district routes, not from cities. BRTC double-decker buses came on the streets on the following day (Sunday), only to be opposed by workers and owners of autotempos. Talking to this correspondent many people said the city dwellers were greatly benefited by the BRTC city service. The government decision will affect the people. As per the settlement between the government and private bus owners, BRTC double-decker service is to be withdrawn from inter-district routes, not from city routes, they said. According to BRTC sources, it had earned Tk 2.40 lakh profit per month by leasing the two double-decker buses for Tk 3400 a day.
