AL enforces hartal today to protest Khulna murder

The main opposition Awami League (AL) enforces a dawn-to-dusk hartal across the country today to protest the killing of advocate Monzurul Imam, a member of the party's advisory council and president of AL's Khulna City unit.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the party's central working committee on Monday and is being supported by the Left Democratic Front, an alliance of left-leaning parties.

Police said some 5,000 law-enforcers including paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) would be deployed in the city today to maintain law and order during the hartal hours.

Police dispersed a big pro-hartal procession brought out from AL headquarters at Bangabandhu Avenue last evening. Some people from the procession reportedly damaged some cars near the Paltan intersection.
