Bank upend AKC

Sonali Bank caused the biggest upset in the Green Delta Premier Division Hockey League when they handed defending champions Abahani Krira Chakra a 3-2 defeat in a 'Super Five' phase match at the Maulana Bhasani National Stadium yesterday.

The defeat not only broke the unbeaten run of the popular sky-blues but it also put them in danger of being pushed down the points table from the top spot.

Indian Anil Ekka was the architect of the youthful bankers' win, scoring two goals.

Mamun Hossain netted the other for the winners.

Nakib and Ramij scored for Abahani.

The defeat put Abahani glued to their previous collection of 28 points from eleven matches while their nearest rivals Mohammedan, who have a match in hand, followed them with 26 points.

On the other hand, Sonali Bank, who lost their first round match 1-4 to the holders, increased their tally to 19 points from eleven matches.

The bankers led the first half 2-1.

Ekka stunned Abahani in the 28th minute when he sounded the board with a powerful hit after dodging custodian. And the defending champions were totally bamboozled when Mamun Hossain doubled the margin three minutes later.
