Govt showcaused for holding back Proshika fund

The High Court yesterday served a show cause notice on the government asking it to reply in two weeks why a fund release application of Proshika Manobik Unnayan Kendra, an NGO, should not be disposed of.

The court order came after Dr Quazi Faruque Ahmed filed the writ petition for Prosika for fund release.

Prosika applied to the NGO Affairs Bureau on September 9, 2001 to release funds for its 'Towards a Poverty Free Society' project. According to a government circular, decisions for such applications should be cleared within 14 days, but the bureau did not reply as yet.

The bench comprising Justice Amirul Kabir Chowdhury and Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Haque issued the notice.

Dr Kamal Hossain, Dr Shirin Sharmin and Barrister Tania Amir moved the petition, while Deputy Attorney General Adilur Rahman appeared for the state.
