4 DMCH docs, Ramna OC showcaused
UNB, Dhaka
The High Court Division yesterday asked the director and three doctors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and the officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station to explain why they should not be removed from their responsibilities for their alleged failure in providing medical services to a dying patient. On August 18, an unidentified man, aged about 40, was brought to the DMCH in critical condition for treatment. He reportedly died in front of the emergency "without treatment despite repeated requests". Rounauk, a BBA student of North South University, found the unknown man seriously ill and lying on the road in front of the radio station at Agargaon. He brought the man to Suhrawardy Hospital where the doctors refused to attend to him and advised the student to take the patient to the DMCH. Accordingly, Rounauk rushed the man to the DMCH emergency. "The doctors on duty there didn't pay heed to Rownauk's request for treating the critical patient. At last, he was compelled to leave the hospital premises keeping the patient on the pavement," the court was told. The patient died the following day and the OC, Ramna, handed over the body to Anjuman Mofidul Islam for burial "without autopsy". Reading the sad story in newspapers, Zakir Hossain Munshi, a lawyer, filed a public interest litigation with the High Court. The High Court then issued showcause notices upon the director, a senior consultant, the resident medical officer and an emergency medical officer of the DMCH, and the officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station. A vacation bench of the High Court comprising Justice Amirul Kabir Chowdhury and Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Huq issued the rule, returnable in four weeks.
