Accidental shot hits rickshaw-puller

A rickshaw-puller was shot and wounded at the southwest gate of the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday when a bullet fired 'accidentally from the rifle of a bodyguard of a ward commissioner of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC)' hit in the leg.

Komol, 25, the rickshaw-puller, was heading for Paltan Maidan at around 4:00pm to attend the ruling BNP's silver jubilee celebrations when the bodyguard of Motahar Hossain Jahangir, commissioner of DCC ward No. 52, accidentally pulled the trigger, police sources said.

Komol was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he underwent an operation. Komol hails from Shimpur village of Nikali, Kishoreganj.

However, the ward commissioner denied his bodyguard accidentally firing from his rifle, sources said, adding that police officials are looking into the incident.

The gunshot caused panic among the BNP activists who were going to Paltan Maidan to take part in the rally to be presided over by BNP chief and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
