Suborno Kazi, who has played the lead in Durdarshan serial on young Kazi Nazrul Islam (telecast on BTV last year), presented Nazrul's songs and poems on 26th August evening at Kochi Kanchar Bhaban. Commentary on the backgrounds followed these selected songs and poems. The play 'Shilpi' by Kazi Nazrul Islam, in which Suborno plays the lead role, was telecast on Channel i. The play is about the life of a painter, and the tussle between his wife and his lover and it is directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam.Suborno is the grandson of Kazi Ali Hossain, the youngest brother of Kazi Nazrul Islam. He is trained at the Nazrul Academy in West Bengal. Suborno says, "My teacher there was Shombhu Nath Chokroborty. When I joined Raniganj College, West Bengal, I had Gurushankar Jaishwalji for my teacher in classical music for three years. Next I joined Rajyasangeet Academy, Calcutta, West Bengal. "There he took part in various workshops where he was trained by Birendrachandra Mitra, Sattya Chowdhury, Padmarani Chattapaddya, the teachers having once been students of Kazi Nazrul Islam. "There I could also get Dhiren Bose, Biman Mukopaddya as my teachers for music." Asked about his teachers in Bangladesh, Suborno said that he had learnt with Feroza Begum and Sohrab Hussain. He said that he was seriously performing in public for five years. Apart from singing he was acting on stage since childhood, under the guidance of his father, Kazi Rezaul Karim, who was the secretary of the Nazrul Academy at Churulia, his village home. Apart from "Shilpi" he has taken part with group theatre such as the Hindol group and taken part in dances connected with Nazrul's works too. He has also acted in a film in 1994, directed by Rafiqul Bari Chowdury and script by Dr Rafiqul Islam, where he performed as the teenaged Nazrul. Dwelling on whether he preferred drama to singing he said that both were close to his heart and that he wanted to excel in both.
