Implement CEDAW immediately
Mahila Parishad demands

Leaders of the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad yesterday urged the government to implement the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) without further delay.

"We demand incorporation of necessary clauses into the constitution to facilitate the implementation of the CEDAW, including its Clause 2," said Parishad's General Secretary Ayesha Khanam at a press conference.

The government has been dillydallying over the issue although Clause 2 of the CEDAW is not inconsistent with the constitutional provisions, she said.

The prime objective of the CEDAW is to ensure gender equality and this policy constitutes the foundation rule of the Convention that is aimed to protect the rights of women, said Parishad's International Affairs Secretary Nasimun Ara Huq.

The Parishad has also been trying to incorporate the issue of women's rights and gender equality into the college and university curriculum.

Hena Das and Chitra Bhattacharya were also present at the press conference held at the National Press Club.
