A Rajshahi daily changes hand, name overnight!

Prothom Provat, a Rajshahi-based popular Bengali daily turned into 'Natun Provat' overnight without any prior notice much to astonishment of local people.

The new one came out for the first time on Sunday using same fonts and types and from the office of Prothom Provat.

However, that issue was the 280th issue of Natun Provat as it was said in its logo.

Taking to The Daily Star, Lutfar Rahman, chairman of the editorial board of Natun Provat and president of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries told that the newspaper came out following irregularities by the former newspaper's editor and publisher.

He also said that he and some of his friends financed Prothom Provat. Its declaration was in favour of Shawkat Reza, a young journalist and a deed was also signed giving Reza 10 per cent share of the newspaper.

"But Reza misappropriated the fund of the newspaper forcing us to file a case against him", Rahman said to this correspondent.

But Shawkat Reza, Editor and Publisher of Prothom Provat denied the allegations and said he got bail from the concerned court after showing proper documents. He alleged that a group of ruling BNP loyalists led by wife of a top level BNP leader here and another BNP leader cum businessman captured his newspaper office by force.

He further complained that the group captured all his office equipment including three computer machines, printers, air conditioners and official documents.

Reza disclosed that his life was also under threat as the influential group forced him to go into hiding.

Lutfar Rahman, however, denied all Reza's allegations saying that he 'went berserk' after we brought out separate daily deserting him.
