Urban domestic power tariff shoots

Prices of power for domestic consumption in urban areas rose on September 1 in the latest of three hikes under the present government for what the authorities said 'to balance the prices with rural areas'.For urban domestic consumers, the new rate of a unit of power is Tk 2.50 up to 100 units, Tk 3.00 from 101 units to 400 units and Tk 5 a unit for 401 units or beyond. The rate for agriculture, industries and commercial sectors, however, remained unchanged. The previous prices were Tk 2.26 a unit up to 100 units, Tk 2.41 from 101 to 300 units, Tk 3.61 from 301 to 500 units, TK 4.73 from 501 to 700 units and TK 5.99 for 701 units and beyond. The decision to raise power prices was taken on August 31.
