Muggers stab grocer to death

Muggers yesterday stabbed a grocer to death at Babubazar in Kotwali thana. Three to four muggers waylaid Abu Taher, 48, under Babubazar overbridge at around 7:45am when he was going to Badamtoli market by a rickshaw. The snatchers stabbed Taher in his left chest and left neck, as he refused to hand over Tk 4,000 he was carrying. Locals rushed him to Mitford hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he died at around 9:30am. Son of Fazlur Rahman of Feni, Taher had been running a grocery shop at Rankin Street for about 30 years. Protesting the killing, more than 100 traders of Babubazar and Nayabazar observed a token strike on the street for about 20 minutes from 10:00am yesterday. Taher's nephew Alamgir Hossain filed a case with Kotwali Police Station. In another incident, the miscreants shot a young man inside a shop at west Boxnagar in Demra. Al Amin, 22, was hit in the hips, as eight to ten criminals, allegedly led by Siraj, Russell and Babul, attacked him when he was sitting inside a cassette shop at around 10:00am. He is undergoing treatment at the DMCH. The victim's father Ershad Ullah filed a case with Demra Police Station.
