A nostalgic evening
Fund raising for Chhayanaut
Culture Desk
Chhayanaut has been organizing monthly musical programmes for fund raising of Chhayanaut Bhaban regularly in recent months. Eminent musicians, singers, and dancers are performing for free. Recently on one such evening, Papiya Sarwar, one of the most popular exponents of Rabindra Sangeet, and Mahmudur Rahman Benu, the talented singer of Gono Songeet and Nazrul Geeti, performed at the Shishu Academy premises. The Bangladesh Freedom Foundation organised this particular event. The programme began at 7 pm with an introduction from Prof. Sanjeeda Khatun, chairperson of Chhayanaut. She noted proudly that the Chhayanaut students, past and present, were doing their utmost to raise funds for the Chhayanaut Building Project by participating spontaneously in such events. Papiya Sarwar began her performance by reminiscing about her childhood days. She remembered when Sanjeeda Khatun taught her music in Chhayanaut from the time when she was a student of class VII. Papiya Sarwar presented the audience with a number of distinctive and rarely heard 'Pooja', 'Prem' and 'Prokriti' songs by Rabindranath including 'Tomay Gan Sonabo', 'Ogo Tumi Ponchodoshi', 'Amar Jodi Bela Jai Go', 'Kache Jobe Chile Pashe Holo Na Jawa', 'Dibosho Rajani Ami Jeno', 'Jhoro Jhoro Bhador Badar', 'Tumi To Shei Jabei Chole'. She ended her performance by sharing her nostalgia for Srabon with the audience by singing 'Bandhu Roho Roho Sathe'. It was a performance inspired by her innermost feelings. Mahmudur Rahman Benu was introduced by Prof. Sanjeeda Khatun as an active member of Chhayanaut since its founding and as an expatriate Bangladeshi now residing in UK but always associated with music. Mahmudur Rahman Benu reminisced about joining Chhayanaut initially only because he had to accompany his sister to music classes but pointed out how attending classes and singing soon became his passion. He currently runs a Bengali music school in UK but teaches Maths at a high school. He started his performance with a Veda hymn and then enthralled the audience with many exquisite and uncommon songs many of which were by Nazrul. He talked fondly of Waheedul Haque, Sanjeeda Khatun, Moti Miah, Late Lutfur Rahman and Sohrab Hossain as teachers who had instructed him in Chhayanaut. Most of the songs performed by Mahmudur Rahman were based on popular raagas such as Shankara Bharan, Bagesree, Bhairavi, Chayanaut. He mentioned some of the songs as creations of unknown artistes and pointed out how their styles influenced Kazi Nazrul Islam. He ended his performance with the song, 'Ami Jogoter Kache Ghrinno Hoechee'. In conclsion, he promised to come and sing in Dhaka every summer. All in all, it was an exceptional evening of music for the people of Dhaka. May Chayanaut continue to be successful in organizing these events in the future for music lovers of the city!
