Remembering Mother Teresa
Father Patrick Gomes
Mother Teresa is a name known to the whole world not for any worldly achievement or any political success but for her active charity for the poor and destitute which she made an ideal to be radically implemented throughout her Consecrated life. Mother Teresa has been entitled by the world as a "Living Saint" for her this active charity and love for the poor. And Vatican is officially going to declare Mother Teresa "Blessed" on October 19 this year. While on earth Mother Teresa was endowed by divine inspiration which came from her reflection on Christ's compassionate love for the poor. Mother followed Jesus' life radically. She preached Jesus' ideal of compassionate love with life. Today, September 5, we commemorate her death, reflect on her life to be inspired to dedicate our life for others, particularly for the poor and the underprivileged. Born in Albania and named Agnes by her parents she became a Loretto Sister (a religious nun) with the name Sr Teresa and came to Calcutta (Kolkata) in nineteen fifties. Moved by the extreme poverty of the children of Calcutta bastees she had her "vision" within and began a radical movement to mitigate the suffering of the poor by embracing them with her unconditional love and charity. She began almost alone and with nothing. The orphan, the dying, the sick, the unwanted, the illegal, the drug addict ... found a "mother" who had a heart full of love open for all. Mother Teresa came to Bangladesh with her nuns, opened her communities in Dhaka city (Islampur: Sishu Bhaban; Tejgaon: Home of Compassion) and in other towns and villages of many districts of Rajshahi, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet divisions. From the beginning Missionaries of Charity Sisters have been continuing to keep up the ideals of Mother Teresa, attitude action of Mother Teresa, her convictions of charity and love for the poor and the destitute.
