3 bills tabled in Sangsad

Three bills were introduced to the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday when it sat in the lackluster ninth session boycotted by the main opposition Awami League (AL).Of the bills, the President's (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill seeks to abolish the post of vice-president and the Chittagong Hill-Tracts Regulation (Amendment) Bill to set up three district and sessions judge's courts in as many hill districts. The Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council (Amendment) Bill plans to amend the relevant law. The bills were sent to the parliamentary standing committee concerned for scrutiny. Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan introduced the president's remuneration and privileges bill and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Moudud Ahmed introduced the rest. Earlier yesterday, the Business Advisory Committee of parliament decided to run the current session until September 18. The AL ignored the ruling party's appeal to join the session also on the day and said it would decide on the issue at a parliamentary party meeting on September 14. Bhuiyan called Deputy Leader of the Opposition Abdul Hamid in the afternoon, urging the AL legislators to join the session. Hamid in reply said the ongoing developments gave the party no mood to sit in the House. "The possibility of joining this session is slim. The AL Parliamentary Party will take the final decision on September 14," Hamid told newspersons at a briefing at his office. He dubbed the government overtures as 'eyewash'. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Private Members Bills and Resolutions yesterday submitted its third report, recommending the passage of a bill and rejecting four others. Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar in his speech at the beginning of the session urged the main opposition to return to the House. The House yesterday adopted an obituary reference condoling the death of former lawmaker Mojammel Hossain Sikder, former legislative assembly member Mojammel Hossain and former minister Nurzahan Murshid.
