Visually disabled in gazetted job for the first time

Four visually challenged persons were appointed as gazetted officers for the first time in Bangladesh.

Borhanuddin Hawlader of Madaripur, Swapan Chandra Karmakar of Comilla, Belal Hossain of Chandpur and Khalilur Rahman of Narsingdi are among the seven resource teachers appointed under the Social Welfare Department.

Bangladesh Public Service Commission appointed the seven out of 553 candidates after interviews.

When the four called on Social Welfare Minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed at his office yesterday, the minister said the appointment of the visually challenged created a milestone in the history of mainstreaming the disabled.

Emphasising flourish of their personality and latent talent, the minister asked all to be sincere to their duty and hoped the nation would be able to utilise their potentials.

A total of 664 students are pursuing their education under the Social Welfare Department-coordinated programme for the visually challenged in 64 districts with spending of about Tk 70 lakh a year provided by the social welfare ministry.
