Space theatre steps into 13

Space and Acting Research Centre (SARC), a theatre group working on environment, completes 12 successful years of dedicated activities today. On this completion of an era of theatrical practice to promote awareness regarding the preservation of the country's natural heritage, the centre will soon come up with a string of programmes.

Founded back in 1999 by Ashish Khondoker, SARC introduced a new dimension into the theatrical practice in Bangladesh. In the beginning it conducted mainly workshops on how scripts could be created focusing on different historical architectures of places.

The productions that came out of these workshops include Protno, Mohammad Amin, Mobile, Mrittika, Jal O Baiyu.

Later, the group--better known as Space Theatre--started to work on the historical and archaeological aspects of a particular place. In this regard it brought out Karkhana, Chandrabindu, Dateline Jagannath Hall, Itabari, Akali Batash, Shei Samototey Ei Janopodey. It has also staged a theatre titled Mrittikar Compass that deals with the famous Modhu's canteen in the Dhaka University premises.

Associated at different times with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Loknatya Dal (TSC), Natya Shikkhangan of Natya Chakra, Aniyomito of Munsiganj, and Khulna Laboratory Theatre, SARC has staged these productions.

Anyone interested in space theatrical activities can contact Ashish Khondoker at 24 North Road (1st floor), Dhanmondi.
